When the SEGA Game Gear was launched in 1990, it was superior to the Nintendo Game Boy in almost every way.  It had a full color backlit screen, a landscape format and a more powerful Z80 CPU.  But it had a major flaw - it burned through 6 AA batteries in 3 hours, while the Game Boy could play for up to 30 hours on 4 AAs.  Adjusting for inflation, 6 AA batteries cost 8-10 2025 dollars and kids just didn't have that kind of money lying around.  We needed to save it for chocolate bars!
