The major parallel between dreaming and gaming is that, in both instances, we inhabit an alternate reality - one a biological construct, the other, technological. In Super Mario 2, we encounter a dream-within-a-dream as the player, embodying Mario, falls asleep and dreams of a secret door that leads him on an adventure. After defeating Wart, the most mischievous of all in the world of dreams, and who created monsters and mayhem by playing with the Dream Machine, Mario suddenly awakens in his bed and, as the game ends, the player too returns.
