Stayin' Alive (Mask On)

Sometimes wearing a mask or costume is what allows us to move through a space at all. During the 1970s disco era, bell-bottom jeans, a gold chain, and a moustache granted entry to the checkerboard dance floor, and permission to move differently within the crowd. In the same way, when Super Mario puts on his Tanooki or Fire Mario costumes, he is granted new ways of moving through the game, abilities that make survival possible where it once wasn't. In both cases, the costume is more than decoration, it becomes a tool for stayin' alive.
