Albert Camus famously wrote that 'one must imagine Sisyphus happy'. Condemned to eternity pushing a boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, Sisyphus might easily succumb to despair. But by embracing the struggle itself, rather than the goal, he finds meaning in the absurd.

We find the same struggle in Donkey Kong (1981), where there is no end to the task at hand. The barrels never stop rolling and even reaching the top only returns you to the bottom. The game is endless with no possibility of 'winning'.

Yet by remaining in a state of play, the futility becomes secondary. What matters is the movement, the timing, the climb itself. The barrels never stop, but neither does the game.
