It has been shown by Wolfram and others that chaos and complexity can be produced by the simplest programs. Each step in the program references the previous step and the same basic ruleset is applied each time. We would think this simple input would produce a simple or repetitive output, but experiments have shown that some rulesets ("Rule 30" for example) will actually produce en-ending, never-repeating complexity with patterns that directly echo those seen in natural phenomena.
